Description
The Former Moor Park Methodist Church, now a mosque, was built in 1862 by Poulton and Woodman of Reading. It features orange brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has an aisled rectangular plan oriented at right angles to the road, and a semi-circular portico at the west end, showcasing a simplified Italianate style.
The structure has a tall central section with storeyed aisles and a window arrangement of 1:4:1. Notable elements include a stone plinth, a ground floor sill-band, and a band linking the first-floor windows, along with a moulded frieze and cornice. The pedimented centre is adorned with acroteria and features a semicircular portico with giant round-headed arches supported by square columns with composite capitals. This portico includes a four-band frieze and a deep dentilled cornice with antifixae. Under the portico, there are coupled doorways and tall windows, while above, three low windows create an arcade that breaks into the pediment, with a keyed oculus above.
The flanking bays each contain a narrow round-headed arch with a window on each floor, the upper window being round-headed and set within a stone arch with imposts and a keystone. The six-bay side walls have similar windows coupled in pairs, featuring giant stone mullions. All windows are fitted with margin panes and circular glazing bars.
Inside, the church has a horseshoe gallery supported by slender octagonal cast-iron columns, with an upper aisle arcade of round-headed arches. The east end features a round-headed arch with an organ, and there is a tiered rostrum with a bowed reading desk flanked by curved stairs, along with original pews.
