Description
The portal at the east end of the tunnel on the former Longridge Railway line dates from around 1846 and was built for the Fleetwood, Preston and West Riding Railway Company. It is constructed from coursed rock-faced sandstone blocks and features a brick parapet. The design includes a horseshoe arch made of punch-dressed rusticated voussoirs and a large scrolled keyblock, which is flanked by broad pilasters that rise to the parapet. An ashlar string-course runs along the top of the structure. This portal is part of the junction line that connected Deepdale and Maudlands, constructed to link the Longridge Railway, which opened in 1840, with the Fleetwood, Preston and West Riding Railway.
