Description
St Ignatius School is a school building constructed between 1836 and 1842, likely designed by J.J. Scoles. It was enlarged in 1856 and underwent further alterations between 1866 and 1880. The building is made of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and slate roofs. It has a double-pile plan oriented on a north-south axis and is single-storeyed under a two-span roof. The west range has been extended northwards and includes a two-storey wing at the angle.
The school is designed in the Tudor style, featuring octagonal corner turrets, parapets with ridged coping, and large mullion-and-transom windows. The east range, which is symmetrical and has seen the least alteration, includes a central gabled porch with a Tudor-arched doorway that is now blocked, along with dagger spandrels, a dripmould, and an embattled parapet. There are three 6-light windows on each side of the porch, with short Tudor-arched upper lights, and the gables are parapeted, with the left gable featuring a chimney.
The west front, which was originally symmetrical and had a similar porch that is still in use, has been extended by four windows to the north. All the windows now feature 20th-century six-light joinery that alters the proportions of the originals. The additions at the north end include a tall two-storey crosswing gabled to the east, which has three tall transomed windows in the upper storey, the central one being a 9-light window with two transoms. Above this window is a statue in a niche, and the date 188[ ] is inscribed.
The school forms a group with St Ignatius Presbytery, to which it is now connected by additions, although it was originally a separate building.
