Description
The war memorial in front of the Church of St Ignatius is a parish memorial built in 1922 by J.S. Mangan of Preston, with statuary created by Hooper and Webb of Liverpool. Made from Portland stone and featuring bronze plaques, the rectangular monument stands 22 feet high and is designed in the form of a Calvary. The lower part of the memorial is tripartite, with diagonal buttresses, a moulded plinth, and a dado that projects forward at the center, leading up to an elaborate pedestal for the Crucifix. This is flanked by statues of a sailor and a soldier in mourning. The front of the dado includes a central arched panel with a carved head and crest, which holds a bronze panel with a dedication, along with cusped side panels that feature bronze plaques with figures in relief. The rear of the memorial has panels displaying bronze plaques that list 228 names.
