Description
St Ignatius Presbytery, in Preston, was likely built between 1835 and 1840, probably designed by J.J. Scoles. An addition was made in 1878. The presbytery is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has an irregular plan, originally a double-depth rectangular range, now attached to the chancel of the church, with a crosswing and further side range added to the left. The building is in the Tudor style.
It is two storeys high, with octagonal corner turrets, a string course above the first-floor windows, and a parapet with stone coping. The main range has a symmetrical facade with three windows. A central porch features coupled corner pilasters, a Tudor-arched outer doorway, and Tudor-arched single-light windows in the side walls, complete with an embattled parapet and a glazed roof. Mullioned windows, with two lights and stone surrounds, are found here and in the right-hand gable wall. A canted bay, matching the style of the rest of the building, was added. The projecting wing to the left is similarly styled, with one window on each floor of each side. An arched tympanum in the gable displays the letters "IHS" within a radiant sun, with the date 1878 in the corners. A two-window range, set back to the left of this wing, has a garage entry inserted, but otherwise exhibits matching windows. The rear elevation is relatively plain. The interior remains uninspected.
The presbytery forms a group with the attached school (built in a matching style) and with the church itself.
