Description

Deepdale Hall, formerly the main block of Preston Royal Infirmary, is a hospital building that has been converted into a hall of residence. It was constructed between 1829 and 1833 and underwent alterations and enlargements in the 20th century, likely in 1926. The building is made of red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings, and it features rendered dressings on the upper floors, although the roof is not visible.

The structure has a double-pile plan and was originally two storeys high, but it was raised to four storeys in the 20th century. The façade is symmetrical with a window arrangement of 4:3:4, and the central section is set back. It includes a plinth, sill bands, and a cornice over the first floor, with an original parapet in the centre, as well as a cornice and low parapet over the third floor. The windows are sashed, with raised sills and wedge lintels.

A prominent feature of the building is the full-width, three-bay colonnaded portico, which has a Roman Doric style with one, two, two, and one columns in antis, along with an entablature that includes a cornice and blocking course. The central doorway is framed by an eared architrave and features part-glazed double doors. Above the first floor, there is a former parapet with a central tablet inscribed "ROYAL INFIRMARY," flanked by raised lettering that reads "ERECTED AD" and "MDCCCXXXIII." Above this, there is a centerpiece on the upper floors that displays a shield and arms.

Inside, there is a Jacobean-style staircase, which is likely from the 20th century. Historically, the building was constructed by the Poor Law Vestry as a House of Recovery and was incorporated into the Royal Infirmary in 1870. It was closed as a hospital in 1987. Deepdale Hall forms a group with the original infirmary wing to the west.
