Description

Deepdale Hall, formerly the west wing of Preston Royal Infirmary, is a hospital building that now serves as a hall of residence. It was constructed between 1869 and 1870 by James Hibbert and has been altered over time. The building is made of red brick with sandstone dressings and features slate roofs. It has a long rectangular shape and exhibits a mix of French and Italian architectural styles.

The structure is two storeys high with cellars, and its long side features a window arrangement of 6:3:2, where the three-window section slightly projects forward and is currently covered by a modern link at the ground floor. The windows have sill and head bands, and there is a cornice with semicircular pediments above them. The building is accentuated by clasping corner towers that contain coupled round-headed windows on each side, topped with very tall French pavilion roofs adorned with ornamental iron cresting. The roof is hipped with two spans, also featuring similar cresting at the ends, a central pavilion roof with a corona in matching style, and small extruded roundels along the slope.

At the south end, there is a five-bay loggia at the ground floor with a canopied glazed balcony above. The interior includes large open wards on each floor, known as Albert and Alice Wards, respectively. Deepdale Hall was originally designed as one of two wings for the Royal Infirmary, which opened in 1870. Later buildings attached to the north, west, and east are not of special interest. The hall forms a group with Deepdale Hall, which is the original main range of the Infirmary.
