Description
Stanstead Cottages are weavers' houses built around 1800. They are constructed from coursed watershot gritstone with dressed gritstone surrounds and feature a stone slate roof. The buildings stand three storeys high, with two windows each. Nos 3 and 4 were originally built as a pair, with No 5 added shortly after. Although all windows have been modernized, they remain in their original openings and are graduated in size from floor to floor. There is a modern lean-to at the ground floor of No 4, but the front and back of the cottages are otherwise complete. The cottages have coped gables with kneelers and ridge stacks.
Inside, Nos 3 and 4 originally had a joint top floor loom shop, which is now divided. Notably, No 3 features an unusual roof truss designed to increase usable floor area, with queen posts on the tie and a V strut on the collar. These cottages are a good example of a type of weavers' housing that is uncommon in the area.
