Description

Hobstones Farmhouse and Hobstones Cottages, originally a farmhouse and cottage, date back to the early 18th century, though built on an earlier core. The building is constructed of stone with a stone slate roof, featuring moulded coping, kneelers, and square corbels.

The jettied porch on the left has a doorway with a massive lintel and an incised datestone reading "E/1700", with continuous moulding on the lintel and jambs. A single three-light Venetian window is visible. A wider, two-storey projection to the right features a six-light chamfered stone mullion window at ground level, and a double three-light Venetian window above. A datestone reading "E/1710" appears in the apex. A 17th-century doorway is present on each floor of the projection, with the first-floor doorway blocked. To the left of the porch, one three-light window is visible, with another three-light window and a two-light window above. The central section displays one three-light and one four-light window above. A plain doorway is present, and dripstones are moulded and returned over the ground-floor windows and Venetian windows.

The interior includes an inglenook fireplace and a beehive oven at the rear. A single-storey extension to the right is not of particular architectural interest. The initials "E" and "J" (Edward and Jenet Stephenson) are incorporated into the stonework. The house had already been divided into separate dwellings by 1756.
