Description

The southern entrance to Foulridge Tunnel on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was built in 1796 and designed by engineer Robert Whitworth. It features dressed stone and a curving wall with a semi-circular arch that is flanked by piers. The arch and the lower sections of the piers have vermiculated rustication. There are stone steps leading down to the canal on either side. Foulridge Tunnel is notable as the summit tunnel of the canal, which was initially projected in 1789 but completed in 1796.
