Description

The northern entrance to Foulridge Tunnel, part of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, was built in 1796 and designed by engineer Robert Whitworth. The entrance features dressed stone with curving walls and a semicircular arch that is flanked by piers. Both the arch and the piers have vermiculated rustication up to a certain height. There are stone steps leading down to the canal on either side. Foulridge Tunnel is notable as the summit tunnel of the canal, which was initially projected in 1789 but was completed in 1796.
