Description
Moorgarth is a house built in the early to mid-19th century, originally serving as the Caton workhouse. It was converted into a residence for the Paley family around 1900, likely by Paley junior. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys with an attic and cellar, comprising seven bays. The windows are sash style with glazing bars and plain stone surrounds topped with straight hoods. The seventh bay includes a stained glass window on the ground floor and is blank on the first floor.
Bays four, five, and six are covered by a single-storey porch that has a cornice and parapet. The left side of the porch features a four-light window with square mullions and glazing bars. To the right, there is a doorway with an architrave that has a semi-circular head, a keystone, and an impost band, flanked by pilasters. Above the doorway is a string course and a plaque. The gutter is designed as a cornice, with four modillions above each bay. A hipped attic dormer is situated above the main structure. The gables are finished with copings and kneelers, and there are chimneys, including a third chimney to the right of the fifth bay. On the south side, there are two added two-storey bay windows with hipped roofs, and further additions can be found on the east side.
