Description

Cantsfield Hall is a house built in 1623, with alterations made over time. It is constructed of slobbered rubble and has a slate roof. The building consists of two wings that meet at right angles, likely added to an earlier structure that is no longer present. Both wings are two storeys high with an attic.

The original windows featured external timber lintels, plain reveals, and ovolo-moulded wooden mullions, with a few still intact. On the east wall of the north block, there are two first-floor windows with remaining timber lintels. A similar lintel is found over a blocked opening on the ground floor to the right. The left-hand gable has a chimney, while the south gable wall shows traces of blocked doorways on both the ground and first floors. The left side of this wall is partially covered by the adjoining wing. The right-hand (north) gable has a timber lintel above a door and window on the ground floor, and two lintels on the first floor, one over a blocked opening and the other over a two-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window. The attic contains one window with an ovolo-moulded timber surround and another blocked window.

The south wall of the south wing has two bays with modern windows that have plain stone surrounds, except for a small high opening with plain reveals on the left side of the ground floor. The north wall of this wing features a ground-floor window with a timber lintel and ovolo-moulded wooden surround, and on the first floor, there is a three-light window with ovolo-moulded wooden mullions.

Inside, the north wing has a stone lintel above a modern fireplace, which is carved with the arms of the Cansfield family and inscribed with 'ISABEL CANSFIELD ANO DNI 1623'. On the first floor, there are timber-framed partitions with depressed ogee doorheads, and the roof of the north wing has curved principals. Additionally, there is a blocked ovolo-moulded timber cross window in the north wall.
