Description
Cantsfield House is a house built in 1725, with alterations and remains from the late 17th century. It is finished in stucco with sandstone dressings and has a slate roof. The house has two storeys and five bays, featuring chamfered quoins and a cyma cornice. The windows are sashed with glazing bars and plain stone surrounds, with the ground floor windows having lowered sills. The central door has a plain stone surround, and above it is a plaque with a decorative border inscribed: 'ITI 1725'. There are chimneys on the gables and to the left of the door. To the right, set back, is a lower wing that has a chamfered doorway with a battlemented lintel inscribed: '1686 FIC'. This door is studded and has strap hinges. A rear wing features flat-faced mullioned windows typical of the 18th century and rebated and chamfered windows from the 17th century, likely reused. Inside, the left-hand room has raised and fielded panelling. The wide dog-leg staircase has a closed string, a moulded handrail, and turned balusters. The left-hand room on the first floor is lined with raised and fielded oak panelling and has a dentilled cornice.
