Description
Hilderstone and the cottages adjoining to the north are early 19th century houses located on Hilderstone Lane in Yealand Redmayne. The buildings are pebbledashed with sandstone dressings and feature a slate roof. The main house is two storeys high and has a double-pile plan with a central entrance, end stacks, and chamfered quoins. It consists of three bays, with sash windows that have glazing bars set in plain stone surrounds. The door has a plain stone surround and a cornice hood supported by shaped brackets. The south wall is partly slate hung and includes a stair window with a semi-circular head and plain reveals.
The cottages to the north have a lower roof and feature sash windows with glazing bars in plain stone surrounds. The southern cottage, which appears visually separate but is now part of the main house, has two bays and a central doorway with a plain stone surround and a wooden porch. The northern cottage has three bays, with a door in the first bay that also has a plain stone surround and a cornice hood on shaped brackets. There is a chimney on the north gable and between the second and third bays. Inside, the main house contains a re-used early 18th century dog-leg stair with a closed string, square newels topped with balls, and turned balusters.
