Description
The Church of St Mary is a Roman Catholic church built in 1880 by E. Simpson of Bradford. It is constructed from snecked sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a tall nave and chancel with a continuous ridge line, and low lean-to aisles that have a slightly higher pitched roof over the chancel aisles. The aisles and clearstorey are adorned with small lancet windows, while the west end showcases tall lancets, a hood, and a vesica. A porch is located under a slim south-west tower, which is heavily buttressed and square in shape, transitioning to a louvred octagon above topped with a pyramidal roof. The east window is a steeply-arched 5-light decorated design.
Inside, there is a 5-bay arcade supported by marble columns with heavy sculptural detail. The chancel arch features ringed shafts on heavily carved corbels, and the short 2-bay chancel includes a tall stone reredos and stencilled wall decoration. A timber gallery on marble columns is situated at the west end. The nave boasts an open timber roof with high collars, king posts, and arcaded ashlaring, along with some stained glass from the late 19th century.
