Description
The Church of St. Michael, also known as Holy Trinity, is a Grade II* listed building. It features a late 15th-century tower and nave arcade, with the nave constructed in 1813 and the chancel added in 1846. The church is built of rubble, with the south nave wall pebbledashed, and has a sandstone ashlar tower topped with a slate roof. The structure includes a nave, a north aisle that was widened in 1880, a lower chancel, a timbered south porch from 1880, and a west tower.
The tower consists of three stages, supported by diagonal buttresses and topped with a battlemented parapet. It has bell openings featuring three pointed lights beneath a four-centred head with a hood mould. A similar window is located above the west door, which has two hollow-chamfered orders and a two-centred head with a hood. The south nave wall contains windows from the 1880 restoration, showcasing various styles of perpendicular tracery.
Inside, the church has a five-bay arcade connecting the nave and chancel, supported by octagonal piers and arches with two chamfered orders. The nave features a hammer-beam roof with king posts, while the chancel has scissor-braced rafters and collars. Between the chancel and its aisle is a sandstone memorial to Robert Cole, who died in 1642, complete with a coat of arms and the inscription, "It is supposed that he lived above 100 years."
