Description
This building is a school, originally dating to 1637 with a later addition in 1857, situated in Bolton-le-Sands. The original section, at the rear, is constructed of slobbered cobbles and limestone, with sandstone dressings and a stone slate roof. The 1857 wing extends north towards the road and displays squared punched sandstone on its gable and east walls.
The south wall of the original school features a large window framed by a reused surround with 17th-century rebated and chamfered details. The east gable has a mullioned and transomed window from the 19th century. The west gable shows a chimney with weathered offsets, a moulded string, and a cornice. There's also a blocked one-light, chamfered window surround and a blocked two-light, rebated, chamfered window under the eaves. Only a portion of the original school’s front wall remains, incorporating a plain chamfered surround with the date '1637' carved into a sunken panel in the lintel.
The 1857 wing's gable displays a mullioned and transomed window with a hood mould, bearing the date '1857' on a panel above, and a one-light window near the apex. A bellcote with a bell sits atop the gable. An eastward projecting chimney is corbelled out from the east wall.
