Description

This is an 1837 bank barn situated to the north-east of Halton Green East Farmhouse. It is constructed of roughly coursed sandstone rubble with rock-faced quoins and dressings, and has a slate roof. The barn has two storeys and a symmetrical facade on its farmyard side. The central cart entrance is flanked by windows, and further shippon doorways are located at each side. A continuous drip course runs above the central cart entrance. Above the cart entrance, a plaque in raised gothic script reads 'fieri fecit Ricardus Sparling - Berry anno salutis mdcccxxxvii', indicating that Richard Sparling Berry built the barn. Both gables have Gothic copings, with the right-hand gable retaining its finial. Within the apex of each gable is a trefoiled owl hole surrounded by deep gothic mouldings under a pointed hood mould with decorative stops. The right-hand gable has three plain stone lintels over modern windows on the ground floor. The rear wall features a wide central entrance at a higher ground level, with a 4-centred head.
