Description

Aughton House is a house that dates back to the 17th century, located on Main Street in Halton-with-Aughton. It is built from slobbered sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The house consists of two units with a central entrance and end stacks, standing two storeys tall with an attic. To the left of the porch, there is a modern casement window with a plain surround. To the right, a three-light window has square mullions. On the first floor, there is a two-light window with a square mullion to the left and a similar window to the right, although the mullion has been removed from that one. The gabled porch includes a doorway in the left return wall and a window with plain reveals in the right wall. At the rear, the house features a rebated and chamfered window surround on the first floor, stone gutter corbels, and a later wing. Inside, there are upper crucks in the attic.

Adjoining the house to the north-east is a barn that shares the same construction style and has a continuous roof. This barn features two wide segmental-arched openings, with the left opening now partly blocked to create a smaller doorway. A gable chimney and a blocked window at the rear suggest that the barn may have had a domestic use in the past. There is also a later barn that adjoins the house to the south-west, which has a lower slate roof with gable coping and a kneeler. The wide central entrance under a segmental arch is now partly blocked to form a narrower doorway, and there is a small pitching door under the eaves to the left.
