Description
Far Highfield, also known as Northern House, is a farmhouse dating from 1687, as indicated by the inscription on the door lintel. The building is constructed from slobbered sandstone rubble and features a modern tile roof. It has a two-unit plan with a central entrance and gable stacks, standing two storeys high with an attic.
On each floor, there are two rebated and chamfered window surrounds, although each has had two mullions removed. The cyma moulding of the door jambs rises to create a battlemented lintel. The east gable includes a blocked one-light attic window and a stack that projects on stone corbels at the attic floor level. At the rear, the first floor has one three-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window, while an outshut against the east end of the rear (north) wall features a two-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window on the ground floor.
