Description

Peel Fold Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that has been converted into a house, with parts restored and others in a ruinous state. It is constructed of sandstone rubble laid in graduated courses, featuring quoins and a stone slate roof that is now at two slightly different levels. The building has a three-bay baffle-entry plan, with the third bay designed as a crosswing and a stair turret located at the rear of the second bay.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with the first bay restored to include a mullion window on each floor and a moulded doorcase near the junction of the second bay. The second bay features a prominent five-light stone mullion window with a hoodmould. The first floor has additional two- and three-light mullion windows. The gable of the wing, which is in a ruinous state, projects slightly and contains one double-chamfered stone mullion window on each floor, along with a small attic light that has a rounded head and hollow spandrels. The rear of the building has six stone mullion windows, one of which is not in its original position, and a small round-headed stairlight.

Inside, the farmhouse includes cyma stop-chamfered beams, a stone spiral staircase, and a smoke hood at the junction of the first and second bays, although the fireplace has been removed. Historically, this farmhouse was the home of Robert ("Parsley") Peel, who is noted for conducting early calico printing experiments here, and it is also the birthplace of Sir Robert Peel.
