Description
Knuzden Hall is a house dating to 1784. It incorporates parts of an earlier 17th-century farmhouse. The house is built of watershot coursed sandstone with quoins, and has a slate roof with gable chimneys. It is three bays wide and three storeys high, with a symmetrical five-window front. A moulded stone eaves cornice runs along the top. The central panelled front door has a semi-circular fanlight with intersecting glazing bars, sheltered by a Tuscan doorcase with an open pediment. The ground and first floors have tall windows; the second floor windows are square. All windows are replacements with glazing bars. A quoin at the left corner is lettered “TB (= Thomas Baron), 1784”.
Inside, a good contemporary staircase features scrolled brackets, an open string, stick balusters, and a ramped handrail. A ground floor room at the rear of the third bay contains chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and one three-light double chamfered stone mullion window. Historical information can be found in Ainsworth Homesteads, pages 279-284.
