Description
Stanhill Hall, originally known as Stanhill House, is a house dated 1748, but likely remodeled around 1840. It is constructed of coursed rubble with quoins and later sandstone dressings, topped with a tile roof featuring gable chimneys. The building has a double-pile, three-bay plan and stands two storeys high, exhibiting an almost symmetrical façade. The remodeling reflects Gothic style, highlighted by a large two-storey gabled porch at the center, which is flanked by crenellated turrets. The porch features a Tudor-arched doorway, a two-light window with a small pediment on the hoodmould, and a prominent stone in the apex inscribed with "G : H" (representing George Haworth) and the date 1748. There are two windows on each floor, all square, each with three arched lights, high transoms, and hoodmoulds. Historically, Stanhill Hall was the home of the 19th-century popular novelist William Westall.
