Description

The Oswaldtwistle Club is a house and warehouse built in the late 18th century, originally associated with handloom weaving and now serving as a club and motor workshop. The building is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble, with some parts rendered. It features a roof with two levels, made of slates and some corrugated sheet, and has a cut-down chimney on the left gable along with a ventilator on the ridge of the house.

The structure has a double pile plan, with the house comprising three bays and two storeys, while the warehouse has four bays and three storeys. The house is symmetrical, with a central doorway that has been reduced to a window, flanked by two additional windows on each floor, all featuring plain surrounds. The first bays of the warehouse include first-floor windows and second-floor loading doors, with the first bay now rendered as a club, featuring a new door and window at ground level. The centre of the warehouse has a square garage entrance, and the right end has a stone-framed door with a cornice.

On the right return wall, there are three windows at ground level and two on each floor above. The rear of the warehouse has a blocked wagon arch in the first bay, with the rest covered by a two-storey extension. The rear of the house features two square windows that are sashed with glazing bars. Historically, the building was likely constructed by a putting-out cloth manufacturer and the warehouse was used as a smithy in the 19th century, which included inserted fireplaces and chimneys, as well as living quarters on the first floor.
