Description
The Canal Warehouse, located on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, was built in 1836. It features watershot coursed sandstone on the front and side, with rubble at the rear, and has a slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan and stands four storeys tall. The road-facing side has two gables connected by a short range that includes a giant arch with rusticated voussoirs and a window on the second floor, with two windows on each floor flanking this arch. The block on the right extends as a long wing to the rear, featuring round-arched openings at the ground floor (now converted to windows), three windows on each of the two floors above, and three-tiered round-arched loading doors on the side and gable walls of the end bay. The warehouse was constructed by the Hargreaves Brothers, who were calico printers based in Broad Oak, Accrington.
