Description
A pair of townhouses, likely dating from around the 1820s and 1830s, situated on a corner plot. The houses are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. They have a double-depth plan, with the main axis running parallel to West Beach. The front facing Beach Street has two stories and four windows. A sillband, frieze, and cornice run along the first floor, and the gable is treated as a pediment over the first three bays, creating a symmetrical appearance. A central, rounded doorway has a stepped brick surround and a wooden doorcase featuring engaged columns, a mutuled and patterned lintel with geometrical designs, and a fanlight with radiating glazing bars. The ground floor windows are sashed windows without glazing bars, with three windows above. A fourth window is positioned above a segmental-headed archway on the right side. The facade facing West Beach comprises the returned side of the first house and the three-window front of No.11 West Beach, featuring a sillband, a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a centrally placed doorway which was originally similar to the one at No.1 Beach Street, but is now rendered and has an altered fanlight. There are three large, tripartite sashed windows on the ground floor, set within segmental-headed blank arches, and four-pane sashed windows on the first floor. The properties form a group with Nos. 2, 3, and 4 Beach Street.
