Description

This is a villa, dating to around 1840, that has been converted into two separate houses, 16 and 16A West Beach. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings, and a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan with a long extension to the rear. The main facade originally had four windows, but this is now reduced to two in each property, with the central section slightly set back. The outer bays feature canted bay windows on the ground floor, while the other windows are four-pane sashes arranged in a cross-window pattern, each with a hoodmould. The right-hand return wall of 16 has a tall doorway with a cavetto moulded surround and hoodmould, leading to a panelled door and overlight; alongside are windows with altered glazing to imitate sashes with glazing bars. The left-hand return wall of 16A has an inserted doorway with a panelled door and overlight featuring diagonal glazing bars, protected by a Georgian-style porch with two columns, and various sashed windows with glazing bars. Stone chimneys, panelled and with cornices, are located on the gables and ridge. The interior of 16 includes a staircase with an open string and wreathed handrail.
