Description

The Clifton Arms Hotel was built between 1839 and 1840, with later alterations and extensions in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern with sandstone dressings, and has a hipped slate roof. The original design was a double-depth plan, and it initially comprised a symmetrical five-bay facade with a central porch and full-height canted bay windows projecting from the outer bays. A four-window extension was added later in the 19th century.

The building has a plinth, a band at the first floor level, a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The central porch is a prominent feature and is constructed of stone with three superimposed coupled pilasters. The ground-floor pilasters have intricately carved capitals, and all have moulded cornices. The porch features an altered doorway at ground floor within an elliptical blank arch, and tripartite windows on the upper floors accompanied by cast-iron balconies with simple geometrical designs. The pediment displays the Clifton shield of arms, featuring an arm-and-dagger emblem. The canted bay windows each have three windows per floor, while the intermediate sections have two windows at ground floor within elliptical-headed blank arches. All windows have raised sills and wedge lintels, with altered glazing. The later extension replicates the style, and includes canted bay windows on the second and fourth bays, which have round-headed windows at ground floor. A pediment above these bays displays the Clifton arms. There are seven chimneys on the front roof slope. The left gable wall has irregular window placement, and a lower three-storey service wing extends beyond. The interior was remodelled in the 20th century.
