Description
No. 1 Church Street is a house, likely built in the mid-18th century. It is constructed of handmade brick and has a slate roof. The building is L-shaped with two bays, the second bay projecting and its roof extending downwards. It has two storeys with a doorway located at the angle and another in the re-entrant of the projection. To the left, there is a large segmental-headed window with a gauged brick head, and above it, a 2-light casement window with a run-out wooden lintel, although the glazing has been altered. The front of the second bay features a fixed 15-pane horizontal rectangular window with a similar wooden lintel, along with another 2-light casement window above it. A chimney is positioned behind the ridge at the left gable. The right return wall, which forms the side of the approach to Town Bridge, has a large blocked opening at ground level and a smaller one above. The rear wall shows a stepped vertical joint at the junction of the bays, with a lean-to addition on the first bay. There is a 2-light casement with glazing bars on the first floor of the second bay and an inserted window below it. This wall has been raised by four courses, with the raised section being continuous and supported over the stepped break by a wooden beam. The interior has not been inspected.
