Description

This structure, located to the north-west of Slater Terrace in Burnley, is a warehouse that was converted into a boiler-house and engine-house for Sandygate Mill around 1860. At the time of inspection in July 1990, it was derelict. The building dates from the mid-19th century and has undergone later modifications. It is constructed of coursed gritstone and features a Welsh slate roof.

The warehouse is oriented roughly east-west and has taking-in doors that open to both the Leeds-Liverpool Canal to the north and an unnamed street off Sandygate to the south. It is two storeys tall. The canal elevation has a regular six-window range, although all windows are blocked. The first-floor windows have stone sills and lintels that align with the moulded stone eaves cornice, except for the third bay, which is a loading bay with a lower opening set in a tooled surround and an iron frame for a joist at sill level. The ground floor features two windows on the left, similar to those above. The loading bay has a large round-headed opening on a plinth, which is blocked and has a later window that is also blocked. To the right, there are three windows, two of which are round-headed with transoms at impost level, while the tall window on the extreme right is partly infilled with brick. A small contemporary end stack with gable coping is located to the left, and a later tall stone stack with iron hoops protrudes through the front roof slope on the left side.

The rear of the building has a tall rusticated plinth and an additional tall plinth for a corner stack that has since been dismantled. There are two large windows and a slightly recessed taking-in door under the gable. Attached to the rear of the warehouse is an engine house, which has a rectangular plan and features one round-headed opening on each wall, except for the north wall, and is topped by an iron panelled water tank. The interior of the building was not inspected. This structure is attached to and groups with Slater Terrace.
