Description

Lower Howorth Fold Farmhouse is likely a 17th-century farmhouse, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries (a doorway lintel is dated 1777), and altered in the 20th century. A recent swimming pool has been added to the north end. The building is constructed of sandstone, with the main range rendered and later additions of coursed rubble, all painted white with black dressings, and has a stone slate roof.

The plan is unusual, consisting of two unequal sections built at different times, with a short, parallel wing added to the front of the larger southern unit, likely in the 18th century, and a service wing added to the rear of the northern unit, probably in the 19th century.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, including a full basement to the northern unit, and has a 1:2 window arrangement. The southern unit’s main range has a moulded Tudor-arched doorway near the angle with the wing. A lintel above the doorway bears the inscription "H / G E 1777". It also features a studded board door, a small 2-light window with a chamfered flush mullion, and a recessed 2-light casement under the eaves, all with chamfered surrounds. The northern unit has double-chamfered mullioned windows across all three levels: 2- and 3-light windows at basement level, a 6-light window to the raised ground floor with a hood-mould, and a 4-light window at the first floor. The front wing has recessed 4-light windows on each floor, with ovolo-moulded mullions, seemingly re-used. Chimneys are located on the gable and at the junction of the ranges. The rear of the southern unit incorporates a king-mullioned window of 3+3 lights at ground floor and a 4-light window above, both with chamfered flush mullions. The north side of the rear wing has a 3-light flush-mullioned window at the first floor.

Inside the northern unit, the ground floor is raised approximately 1 meter above the basement, which contains some timber-framed wattle-and-daub partitioning. On the first floor, there are a pair of massive, crudely-chamfered axial beams and a cupboard recess within the chimney stack, with a moulded plaster surround. The southern unit also has a similar pair of beams on the ground floor. The building forms a group with Howorth Fold Poultry Farmhouse to the north.
