Description

Stiperden House is a farmhouse that includes an attached barn and stable, dated 1658 above the doorway. The building has been altered, likely raised, and extended. It is constructed from coursed sandstone, with some squared and some rubble stone, and features quoins and a stone slate roof. The long rectangular structure faces down towards Paul Slough, which marks the county boundary. The barn is added to the left end, and the stable is at the right end of the two-bay house, all under one roof.

The house is two storeys tall and has an added single-storey gabled porch in the centre, with a doorway on the left side. The roof of the porch crosses a recessed datestone that has raised lettering, showing part of the name THOM(AS?) above the roof and "THIS HO ANNO: 1658" below it. On the left side of the house, there is a recessed mullioned window with late 17th century or early 18th century characteristics: three large lights on the ground floor and four smaller lights above, although the first and third mullions are missing. On the right side, there are 19th century rectangular windows with altered glazing on each floor. Ridge chimneys are located at the junctions to the left and right.

The barn continues to the left and has two doorways, with a formerly-mullioned two-light window between them, although the upper part is blocked. The stable on the right has a door and a window, both with plain surrounds. The rear of the house features four small square windows at ground level, one at mid-level, and one on the first floor, all recessed and mostly with remnants of former mullions. The nearer end of the barn has two similar openings on each floor, and beyond these is a large square opening leading to the loft.

Inside the barn, the junction wall with the house shows the line of a formerly much lower roof, and above and to the left of this is a small square chamfered window, which is blocked. The interior of the house has not been inspected.
