Description
This milestone, located in front of the Local Authority office in Ashton in Makerfield, is possibly from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with an inscription added in the mid-19th century. It is made of stone and features curved sides that come to a sharp edge at the front, with a chamfered top. On the north side, the chamfer is inscribed with "TO/ASHTON/VILLAGE/BRIDGE/1090/YARDS" in italic letters, while the side reads "TO/WARRINGTON/8 MILES." On the south side, the chamfer is inscribed with "TO/BRYN/STATION/640 YARDS" in italic letters, and the side states "TO/WIGAN/4 MILES."
