Description

This is a milepost from 1837, made of cast iron, located on a railway bridge on Wigan Lane in Standish with Langtree. The milepost is a fluted, flat post that is now partially buried. It has a segmental-headed, rectangular plate with cresting, and displays the following lettering: "LANGTREE/2 MILES TO WIGAN/6 MILES TO CHORLEY/15 MILES TO PRESTON/(1837)". The railway bridge itself dates to 1837, and the milepost may represent a road improvement undertaken by the railway company.
