Description
Lawson’s Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century, located in Golborne. It is constructed of English garden bond brick with a slate roof. The house follows a baffle-entry plan, consisting of two rooms wide and two rooms deep, extending over two storeys. It has a twin-gabled, two-bay facade, with a door to the right, positioned below a segmental-arched brick lintel. A raised lozenge band is visible at first floor level. There are two three-light casement windows on each floor, each with segmental brick arches. Chimney stacks are positioned on both returns, and retain original horizontally sliding sash windows. The right return displays a deep stone plinth, partly obscured by a later lean-to addition.
Inside the house, there are massive ovolo-moulded ceiling beams and a bressumer beam above an inglenook fireplace, featuring unusual raised broach stops. A large plasterwork panel in the principal room depicts a bush bearing various fruits and acorns in deep relief, likely dating from the early 17th century. A first-floor panelled partition and cupboards are of a similar date. The staircase features heavy turned balusters, a closed string, and square newels. Evidence suggests the structure is a rebuilding of an earlier house, with some parts of the original building surviving or reused. A contemporary garden wall, with round-topped coping stones, runs along the front of the house.
