Description
The Church of St. Luke is a Grade II listed building located on Slag Lane in Golborne. The church was built in 1732, with transepts added in 1771, alterations made in 1813, a chancel probably constructed in 1856, and a tower completed in 1862. It is made of Flemish bond brick and has a slate roof. The church features a three-bay nave with rusticated quoins and round-headed windows that have keystones, impost blocks, Y-tracery, and raised brick panels below the sills. The one-bay transepts have similar windows, with the south transept featuring two lunette windows. The chancel has elementary Venetian windows on each side and a 20th-century vestry added to the north.
The west tower, which replaces the original cupola, conceals the original pedimented door surround dated 1732. The tower has four stages, castellations, diagonal buttresses, and Romanesque detailing on the round-arched door and window openings. The clock face on the tower is dated 1862.
Inside, two of the three original galleries have been removed, along with the box pews and 18th-century font. The remaining gallery is panelled, features dentilled enrichment, and supports the organ loft. Most fittings are from the 20th century, and there is stained glass present. An original studded oak door remains, while the roof structure was replaced in the 19th century. The chancel arch has Romanesque enrichment.
