Description

The Church of St Thomas is a Grade II listed church located on Church Street in Golborne. It was built in 1850, with later additions in 1860 and 1906, designed by Joseph Clarke. The church is constructed from snecked stone and features a clay tile roof. Its layout includes a nave and chancel, a south aisle with a porch, a west tower, and a north chapel. The south aisle has five bays under a pitched roof, with no clerestory lights. Each bay features a projecting plinth, weathered buttresses, and a gabled porch in the second bay, along with a 2-light aisle window that has Geometrical tracery and a hoodmould with head stops. The chancel is highlighted by a 4-light east window and is flanked by vestries added in 1906. The north aisle was intended to be completed but remains unfinished, with only two bays now serving as a side chapel. The tower, which has diagonal buttresses and a pyramidal roof, includes a 3-light west window, gabled clock faces, and 2-light openings for the belfry, which is slightly smaller in plan than the rest of the tower.

Inside, the church features a chamfered nave arcade supported by circular columns with moulded capitals, arch-braced roof trusses, and a carved stone font. The timber pulpit, panelling, stalls, and pews are notable interior elements, along with stained glass windows. The vestry doors are adorned with crocketed ogee-arched hoods.
