Description

Winstanley Hall is a house dating from approximately 1573, with significant extensions and alterations made between 1818 and 1819 by Lewis Wyatt, and further additions in the 1840s. The building has an irregular plan, with the garden front displaying three storeys and five bays, accompanied by a two-storey, three-bay extension from the 1840s on the right. The 1st and 5th bays project outwards, while the 2nd and 4th bays form re-entrant blocks. A top cornice and deep parapet cap the structure. The ground floor features tripartite sash windows in the 1st and 5th bays, while other windows are characterized by ovolo mullions and label moulds. Windows in the 2nd and 4th bays have four lights with transoms, and the 3rd bay has a ten-light window including a king mullion and transom. The first floor presents 5:3:9:3:5-light windows, with transoms present in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th bays. The second floor has three-light windows, two of which are positioned in the 3rd bay. An armorial bearing and the date 1819 are displayed centrally on the parapet. The extension incorporates varied window patterns and bears the date 1843.

The entrance front, designed by Lewis Wyatt, is located on the left return and consists of five bays with a central, four-storey projecting bay. Hollow-chamfered cross-mullion windows are fitted with label moulds, although the second-floor windows lack transoms. A Doric porch at the entrance features an Ionic entablature with a pulvinated frieze, a parapet, and a round-headed entrance with paired studded doors. Flat, projecting lateral stacks with diagonal shafts are positioned between the 1st and 2nd, and 4th and 5th bays. The rear of the building exhibits a canted end bay, gabled bays, and later extensions. A wide gabled bay displays armorial bearings and the date 1780, and includes at least one Diocletian window. The rear includes a mix of mullioned and sash windows.

The right return incorporates extensions from the 1840s and one dated 1889. One canted bay features a first-floor iron balcony, and this is attached to two 17th-century bays with two entrances featuring architraves and bull’s-eye details.

The interior contains friezes, cornices, and fireplaces in the principal rooms. The hall has panelling at one end. One room contains wall paintings resulting from wartime occupation by the R.A.F. A staircase features iron balusters, a Diocletian window, and a ceiling rose. A first-floor room retains 17th-century panelling, alongside two cupboards with strap hinges and a Tudor-head doorway. A room within the 1840s extension showcases elaborate Jacobean-style panelling with herms and a Jacobean-style fireplace; a room below displays panelling and painted glass windows.
