Description
A barn and stable complex, dating to the 17th century, with substantial additions from the 1830s and a later north block, stands to the east of Winstanley Hall. The buildings enclose a courtyard on three sides and are constructed of dressed stone with ashlar dressings, with the northern block being rock-faced stone. The west block bears the inscription "MB/1834".
The main barn, a five-bay structure, has a two-story section that projects with a bowed end, while the flanking bays curve inwards. It features a cornice and parapet, with round-headed windows of two round-headed lights and decorative glazing framing round-headed entrances, each with a simple fanlight. Other bays have large round-headed entrances. Pitched eyes with glazing are situated on the first floor. Behind the barn is a seven-bay section with collar and strut trusses, purlins, and a cross wall. The east entrance is round-headed with weathered buttresses. The southern bay includes a loft floor supported by ovolo-moulded beams with run-out stops and windows with dripstones. A two-story, two-bay cottage adjoins the north end. A screen wall connects the north and south blocks, with a round projection featuring a two-light window and decorative cornice and parapet, topped with a decorative dog. A projecting porch with a mask over the entrance originally housed stables.
The south block is two stories and five bays, with the central bays projecting and taller, featuring a cornice and parapet. It has four-light windows with pointed heads and label moulds, small-paned glazing with intersected heads, and a central elliptical-headed entrance with a four-light window above. Large elliptical headed entrances are present within the first and end bays, with an entrance, now a window, to the first bay, featuring an architrave and small-paned glazing to an overlight. There are also square pitching holes. The central bay has a clock face and pigeon loft entrances to its returns. The interior features iron balusters to stone steps leading to the central bay, and a door with a relief of a horse on the central panel.
The north block comprises seven bays with canted ends, with the central bay projecting and taller. Windows and entrances feature canted heads. These windows are mostly sash windows with glazing bars, and include three- and two-light configurations. Octagonal pitching holes are present, two of which are square. A top octagonal wheel window is located in the central bay, flanked by two hexagonal cupolas with Tuscan columns.
To the right are cast iron gates with openwork octagonal piers and cupolas, richly decorated and dated 1859. Similar gates and hexagonal cupolas are present on the left. A pair of gates connects the north and west blocks, featuring openwork octagonal piers, caps, and dated 1859. Further left, similar gates are present, flanked by square piers with remains of lamp standards. The central paired gates are missing, with single gates dated 1875.
