Description

Hindley House is a house from the 18th century with later alterations, located on Atherton Road in Hindley. The building is finished in stucco and has a slate roof. It stands two storeys tall and features four bays, with the fourth bay being wider than the others. The top of the house has a fluted frieze and a dentilled cornice.

On the ground floor, there is a canted bay window that includes a frieze and a bracketed cornice, with casement windows. The window in the fourth bay is a sash window with glazing bars. The first-floor windows are also casements, and the window in the third bay is enhanced with panelled pilasters, a frieze, and a consoled cornice. The entrance to the third bay features an elliptical head, moulded jambs, and an archivolt. The doorcase is adorned with Doric columns and a fanlight with glazing bars, leading to an eight-fielded-panel door, where the lowest panels are flush, along with glazed side panels.

Inside, the hall showcases a modillion cornice. The staircase has turned balusters and 19th-century turned newels, and there are some six-fielded-panel doors. The room in the fourth bay has a higher ceiling than the rest of the ground floor and features tall panelling above an elaborate chair rail, a cornice, an eight-panel door with a Doric doorcase, and a fireplace with a pediment and flanking Corinthian columns.
