Description
Southworth House is a house dating from the early 18th century, located on Atherton Road in Hindley. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. The building stands three storeys high and has two bays, with a one-bay, two-storey extension to the right. The stone base, bands above the ground and first-floor windows, and quoins add to its architectural detail. The windows on the ground and first floors have cut brick flat arches with stone keys and end voussoirs, and all windows are fitted with casements. The extension has a small-paned casement on the upper floor. The entrance is distinguished by inset architraves and a six-fielded-panel door, with the top panels being glazed. The house has three gable-end stacks, with the one on the extension projecting. At the rear, there is a projecting wing. Inside, the property features chamfered beams and six-fielded-panel doors. The staircase has a close string design, with the upper part featuring a cut string and column balusters, including a cluster of four at the bottom and four in line at the turns.
