Description
The Lord Nelson Hotel is a public house located on Hindley Bridge Street, dating from the late 18th century and remodeled in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick and has a stuccoed front with a Welsh slate roof. Originally, it likely had a three-unit plan but has since been reorganized into a series of small public and private rooms from the mid-19th century.
The building is two stories high and features end stacks and one off-centre forward or ridge stack. The front façade is decorated in a free 16th-century Renaissance style, with a regular three-window arrangement. The ground floor is rusticated, and the windows—two to the right of the entrance and one to the left—have moulded surrounds with added embellishments at the ground level. These windows are sashes with margin panes and have continuous sill bands. The first floor has a frieze of stucco strapwork panels, and the building is accented with rusticated quoins and console brackets at the eaves cornice.
The entrance bay projects slightly and features a doorway with a moulded surround and a dentilled cornice, along with a door that has a rectangular overlight. Above the entrance, there is a large stucco panel in a moulded surround displaying the name of the public house. Inside, there is a half-glazed door with etched glass, and some internal partitions from the original layout still remain.
