Description

Hindley Hall, now serving as a golf clubhouse, is a house that may have originated in 1767. It was remodelled or possibly rebuilt in 1811 when the owner, Sir Robert Holt Leigh, communicated with his sister about building work. Although Hindley Hall is not specifically mentioned, there are references to payments for local workmen and receipts from 1811 that detail building materials like stone, lime, and 34,300 bricks, as well as the polishing of old Italian marble chimney pieces. These documents are held in the Wigan Archive Service at Leigh Town Hall.

The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features three storeys with seven bays, along with a later two-storey, two-bay extension on the right. The third to fifth bays project slightly forward and are taller. It has a stone base, two decorative bands, a top cornice, and a parapet that ramps to the three-bay centre, with quoins at the corners. The windows have wedge lintels and are sashed with glazing bars; the first two bays have blind windows with painted sashes. The entrance is adorned with flat pilasters and an entablature, featuring paired glazed doors. The extension mirrors these details, with first-floor windows and an entrance in the second bay.

The left return consists of six bays, with the sixth bay also projecting forward. The rear of the building resembles the front, though the parapet does not ramp at the centre, which has quoins on the projecting top. There is a 20th-century fire escape present. The right return includes a small service wing. Inside, there is a staircase with brackets supporting a cut string and three turned balusters for each tread. The second floor, which has not been inspected, is reported to have original fireplaces.
