Description

Flixton House is a late 18th-century house built for R. Wright. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with white headers that create a chequered pattern and has a slate roof, while the adjoining outbuilding, which was formerly a barn, has an asbestos slate roof. The house features a symmetrical facade with four bays across and two storeys, along with later additions and alterations to the rear and the outbuilding, which is positioned at right angles to the house.

The entrance is marked by a panelled door located in the second bay, which is topped by a delicate radial fanlight and an open pediment supported by three-quarter Doric columns. To the right, there is a large projecting conservatory of later date. On the left side of the house, there is a sash window, and on the first floor, there are four sash windows, all featuring flat brick arches and stone sills, although none retain their glazing bars. The left return of the house has four similar windows that still have 12-pane sashes. The eaves are supported by paired brackets, and the roof is hipped with ridge chimney stacks.

To the right return, there is a late 19th-century two-storey canted bay window. Inside, the house contains six-panel doors and original fireplaces. The outbuilding features double barn doors beneath a timber lintel, stone-dressed pitching holes, and various door and window openings. Its most notable feature is the open octagonal cupola, with columns supporting a lead-covered canopy topped with a ball finial. The building was illustrated prior to its additions in D. H. Langton's "A History of the Parish of Flixton," published in 1898.
