Description
The Air Raid Siren, built in 1938, is a notable structure featuring a tubular steel post that supports an electrically driven siren. It is located within a small rectangular enclosure formed by a chain-link fence on concrete posts, next to the site of a former fire station. The post stands approximately 10.7 meters high and has an electrical supply cable along with a junction box attached to its exterior.
The siren consists of a central steel housing mounted on a steel base plate, containing an electrical armature motor with a central shaft. At each end of the shaft, there is a steel fan enclosed within a circular case that has multiple stator sound vents with flaps. The fan blades are connected to a rotating hooped rotor vent featuring several rectangular stator vents.
At the base of the pole, there is a small rectangular brick-built equipment cabinet from the General Post Office, which has a concrete slab roof and is secured by a pair of timber doors. This cabinet houses a 3-phase (440 volts) Air Raid Siren Control Unit.
