Description

The Royal Observer Corps Monitoring Post is a monitoring facility built in 1961, following the standard design established in 1956 by the Air Ministry Works Department. It is constructed from reinforced concrete and has a covering of compacted earth.

The exterior of the post appears as a rectangular mound with a flat top, covered in vegetation. It features a raised entrance hatch at one end and a smaller raised air vent at the opposite end. Between these two openings, two metal pipes extend from the mound, which were used to mount monitoring equipment. The pipe nearest the hatch was for the probe of the Fixed Survey Meter, which measured radiation, while the other was for the baffle plates of the Bomb Power Indicator. Additionally, there is a mounting for the Ground Zero Indicator, a pinhole camera device used to detect the direction and altitude of nuclear explosions, located near the entrance hatch.

Inside, the post has a 4.6-meter deep entrance ladder-shaft that includes a drainage sump at its base and a hand-operated pump. This shaft provides access to a small closet containing a chemical toilet and leads to the monitoring room, which measures 4.6 meters by 2.3 meters. A record from 1999 indicates that the post still contained furniture, including fitted shelving and a table.

It is important to note that the monitoring post is not mapped by the Ordnance Survey, and the map depiction of the List Entry is for general identification purposes only. It does not accurately represent the exact extent of the structure and its earth mound, which is smaller than indicated.
