Description

Shop and farmhouse, dating from around 1200, with significant alterations in the 14th century and some 20th-century changes. The building is constructed of squared chalk blocks, with some brick patching, and has a pantiled gabled roof. The west gable has a raised stone coping, rising to a carved and decorated 14th-century roof finial. The original rectangular plan has been extended. The west front, which is two storeys and one bay, features a 20th-century planked door within a wooden architrave, set within a former 14th-century window opening, with the wall beneath removed to accommodate the door and covered by a 20th-century gabled roof. Above is a fine 14th-century three-light window with cusped ogee tracery, moulded mullions, a central transom, and a moulded flat hood mould with human head label stops.

The ground floor interior contains some irregular square aumbries (recesses) in the side walls, now plastered. The first floor shows evidence of an original first-floor hall, defined by a fine hooded fireplace with a bold roll moulding and simple corbel brackets. Traces of two doorways in the east wall open from the hall chamber, and a window with a rounded head, originally a door, is in the south wall. These features suggest the structure is older than some of the documented architectural details, as the thick walls, first-floor access, and rounded arch would have been archaic by the 14th century. To the east of the early block is a later brick house with extensive 20th-century alterations. The site was originally moated; part of the moat is visible to the north of the original block.
