Description
The Ashes is a house dated 1712, located on Mottram Old Road in Stalybridge. It is constructed of squared rubble with ashlar dressings and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has a double-depth central-staircase plan, consisting of two storeys plus an attic, with a 20th-century garage attached to the right gable.
The central door has a segmental head, a chamfered stone surround, and a dated keystone. There are two ground floor and two first floor five-light double-chamfered stone mullion windows, although the mullions have been removed. The ground floor windows have a continuous hoodmould. The house also has stone quoins, coped gables with kneelers, and a ridge chimney stack. A central dormer window features a vertically set oeil-de-boeuf and a coped gable with kneelers and finials. There are also mullioned windows on both gables and at the rear, which has a central door with a keystone surround.
Inside, the front left room includes an ovolo-moulded bressumer beam and decorative plaster enrichment on the ceiling beams.
