Description

This is a group of three houses located on Mottram Old Road. They appear to have originated as two separate dwellings, dating back to 1754, as indicated by a datestone. The houses are constructed from painted squared rubble and have a graduated stone slate roof.

Originally, numbers 176 and 178 were double-depth, two-storey houses, each two rooms wide. However, the left bay of number 178 is now incorporated into number 180, which also has a projecting 20th-century bay. Number 178 (and the right bay of number 180) features a central doorway with a segmental-headed window to its right, above which sits the datestone. Each floor has two 3-light double-chamfered cavetto-moulded mullion windows, with a similar 2-light window located centrally on the first floor. Number 176, constructed slightly later, has a central doorway and two recessed cavetto-moulded mullion windows on the ground floor, alongside two 3-light flush cavetto-moulded mullion windows on the first floor. A lean-to garage is attached to the right gable. There are three brick ridge chimney stacks. The rear elevation has 2- and 4-light flat-faced mullion windows. The interiors have been altered, but retain original floor beams and roof construction.
